Honoring Local Legacy

The Ranch at Caliterra sits on the historic H.C. Carter estate—an extraordinary working ranch once owned by Henry C. “H.C.” Carter, a renowned cattleman, developer, and storyteller with deep roots in Texas history. Stretching along Onion Creek, the ranch was listed for over $5.6 million in 2011, prized for its natural beauty, rich cultural ties, and iconic Hill Country landscape.

Carter was more than a landowner—he was a living archive of Texas lore. His vivid recollections of trail drives and frontier life earned him top billing in James Michener’s sweeping novel Texas, with Michener famously stating:

“Carter, if this book’s a failure, it’s your fault.”

Carter also raised Longhorn cattle and embraced a life that balanced tradition and sophistication—often attending cattle sales in the morning and black-tie galas by night. His ranch even appeared in the 2004 film The Alamo, with sets left behind that became a local draw and commercial shoot location.

Today, Caliterra honors that legacy by preserving eight acres of the original estate for the Carter family—ensuring the land’s history continues through its people. Residents of The Ranch at Caliterra aren’t just buying homes—they’re stepping into a story-rich landscape where Texas history, culture, and conservation live on.

As Greg Rich of SR Capital Management explains:

“Caliterra has always been about celebrating the Hill Country’s natural beauty and building community. The Ranch at Caliterra is a continuation of that vision.”
